We call it the Good Girl double bind. 

Don’t be too proud, don’t be too loud, don’t be too sexy, don’t be too demanding, don’t be too bossy, don’t be too much…

BUT ALSO, and often at the same time…

Don’t be a doormat, don’t be too quiet, don’t be too frigid, don’t be too emotional, don’t be too needy, don’t be not enough…

In this impossible bind, the resulting compression shows up in a woman's presence: her natural self-expression is squeezed and warped.
